Local Model Serving Traps: IPv6 Stalls and Context Ceiling Reloads
How a Windows IPv6 socket stall and an Ollama context ceiling mismatch degraded local agent performance.
Core Finding:When running local language models on developer workstations, mysterious multi-second latency spikes are rarely caused by GPU compute bottlenecks. In our production profiling, we uncovered two architectural traps: a 2,043 ms Windows IPv6 socket connect stall and a 12.6 s PCIe weight reload caused by context ceiling mismatches in Ollama.
IPv6 Socket Stall
2,043 ms
Connecting to localhost on Windows attempted ::1, stalling 2.04 seconds on WinError 10061 before falling back to IPv4.
IPv4 Explicit Speedup
352x Faster
Explicit 127.0.0.1 loopback reduced embedding requests from 2,040 ms down to 5.8 ms.
Context Reload Penalty
12.6 s PCIe Reload
Requesting a context size different from the resident model forced a full 15.0s cold reload over PCIe.
SQLite Cache Lookup
1,965x Speedup
Eliminating fsync on read cache hits reduced query latency by 96.3%.

Engineering Action Directives
- Operating system network stack defaults, such as IPv6 dual-stack resolution on Windows localhost, can introduce silent multi-second latency penalties that mimic model execution stalls.
- Local model daemons that manage dynamic context windows must maintain consistent context allocations across sessions to avoid full weight reloads over PCIe.
Methodology Boundaries & Limits
- OS specific: IPv6 loopback connection timeout behavior was measured on Windows 11; Linux and macOS network stacks typically resolve localhost IPv4/IPv6 differently.
- Runtime version: Ollama context reload behavior was measured on Ollama 0.3.x; subsequent daemon updates may adjust context cache persistence policies.
